What to ask your beta-readers

I am in full-swing beta-reader mode. Sharing my books with friends and my writer's group is INTIMIDATING. I promise it gets a little easier every time. And the benefit outweighs the cost. The feedback has been priceless! I stumbled across this link of beta-reader questions and combined it with some ideas of my own. Here are the questions I just asked my last reader.

1. Does the title fit the story?

2. On a scale of 1-10, did the title influence your desire to read the story?

3. At what point were you hooked in the story?

4. Was the story believable enough to keep your attention?

5. Did you get oriented fairly quickly at the beginning as to whose story it is, and where and when it’s taking place? If not, why not?

6. Could you relate to the main character? Did you feel her/his pain or excitement?

 7. Did the setting interest you, and did the descriptions seem vivid and real to you?

 8. Was there a point at which you felt the story started to lag or you became less than excited about finding out what was going to happen next? Where, exactly?

 9. Were there any parts that confused you? Or even frustrated or annoyed you? Which parts, and why?

10. Did you notice any discrepancies or inconsistencies in time sequences, places, character details, or other details?

11. Were the characters believable?

12. Did the dialogue keep your interest and sound natural to you? If not, whose dialogue did you think sounded artificial or not like that person would speak?

13. Did you feel there was too much description, exposition or dialogue? Or not enough?

14. Was there enough conflict, tension, and intrigue to keep your interest?

15. Was the ending satisfying? Believable? 15. Do you think the writing style and suits the genre?

16. What was your favorite part?
