General Conference Re-cap
I would have to say that General Conference was incredible! I either must be getting more spiritually sensitive, or just need a lot of uplift (I fear the latter), because EVERY talk had something in it that I needed to hear.
I can't say there was just one talk that I loved more than the other. Though, I do have to say that when Elder Holland speaks, I can just feel my passion for the gospel being awakened inside of me. I want to stand up and shout, "I'm a Mormon!" Elder Holland and Elder Hales both talked about the scripture story from the New Testament, where the Savior comes to Peter and the apostles while they are fishing. This is the second time He has come to them, in this very same spot. The first time was when He called them to be his apostles, and asked them to follow Him. The second time He came, the Savior asks them, "Lovest thou me?"
Jesus goes on to teach the apostles that if they love Him, than they will feed His sheep. This is a familiar scripture story, but I gained a new perspective on what Peter and the others must have been thinking. They weren't told, "I have called you to be a missionary to this place, for this long." Or, "When you are called as an apostle, that is a calling for life. It doesn't mean that after I leave you, you can just go back to fishing and forget about the work." They were confused, and without direction when the Savior left them--even though he had only physically left them.
They had been out fishing all night. And, their night had been fruitless. They had caught nothing. Then the Lord came and the fish were a plenty. Elder Holland said that the Lord was trying to tell Peter that if He needed fish, He could get fish. What He needed was disciples. And Peter finally understood, and devoted the rest of his life to missionary work.
Not only did I gain more understanding of the story, but I realized that often my perspective on my own mission is a little off. The Lord isn't going to come tell me how to live each day of my life. But, He has given me promptings, as well as the scriptures that tell me what how I need to be living. He needs me to look outside of myself for ways I can feed his sheep, and serve and lift others. It also helped me to remember the times that I have had long nights, because of something I am going through in my life. The Savior let me experience that struggle, because he knew that I would be more teachable when I had become sufficiently humbled.
I am so grateful for the gospel! It brings me so much joy! I am excited to study the messages of conference for the next six months.
